Dream Machine

Transportation is vital to our services at ImmacolataManor (IM).We have a total of nine vehicles used in our residential program and each of seven homes has a car for the use of its residents. Our staff transports residents into the community for employment, volunteer and recreational opportunities, medical appointments and shopping trips, and for other purposes as needs arise. All of our vehicles are out of warranty and we must do preventative maintenance to avoid the costs of major repairs. But, even this maintenance is expensive. In the past year Manor staff logged 30,894 miles during 10,396 trips in these vehicles and we expect this mileage and number of trips to increase as residents. age and need more medical attention. In order to meet the standards of care and community integration for our residents we sought funding assistance to purchasing a new, 20., V-10, 15 passenger Small Bus.

Besides being a huge benefit in the areas of transportation and safety agency wide; the proposed bus would also be an aid in the area of risk management, specifically disaster preparedness. A small bus would ensure the safe and effective evacuation of residents and staff in the event of a disaster. On a more positive note, each year Manor residents help design their own individualized person centered plans (PCP); a goal sheet of sorts. For many, trips to such places as Silver Dollar City, Eureka Springs, and the Omaha Zoo are included in their goals as an aspiring dream. Due to lack of adequate and reliable transportation, these dream trips just have not been possible. However, a new 15 passenger bus would allow several residents, accompanied by their support staff, to achieve their dreams.

Residents and staff were thrilled to take receipt of this "DreamMachine" in early June. At a total cost of $51,250, we received full funding from: DDRB $42,400; Oppenstein Foundation $5,000; Rotolo Family Fund $2,000; and My Day Rag Sales $2,125.for a total of $51,525. Everyone was eager to take their first ride on the bus, many clapped and squealed with joy. Staff was relieved as those who are a little unsteady loaded the bus with ease.

We are thankful to have received the support of the Clay County Developmental Disabilities Resource Board (DDRB); Rotolo.s of Blue Springs; and the Oppenstein Brothers Foundation. The My Day Program at ImmacolataManor also pitched in using funds raised selling cotton rags (thank you, Joe and Jean Mazur and the Manor Thrift Shop).

We are currently in the process of researching and collecting bids from print shops to design and apply decorative, branding decals to the bus. Surplus funds will be used for this fun finishing detail.
